TCP CPA Exam Review - What to Study Before Test Day
A review plan can help you avoid going through the same material without knowing whether you are ready.
TCP CPA Exam Review - What to Study Before Test Day
Preparing for the TCP section of the CPA Exam takes more than reading tax rules and memorizing definitions. You need to know what the exam covers and practice using that knowledge in different situations.
Before test day, your goal should be to find the areas that need more work and spend your study time there. A review plan can help you avoid going through the same material without knowing whether you are ready.
The AICPA’s 2026 CPA Exam Blueprint shows that TCP includes multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and task-based simulations (TBSs). The section has 68 MCQs and seven TBSs within a four-hour testing window.
TCP CPA Exam Review - A Guide to Preparing for Test Day
1. Start With the TCP Exam Blueprint
Before your final review, look at the current AICPA TCP blueprint. It lists the content areas, topics, and tasks that may appear on the exam. It also explains the skills you may need to use when answering questions.
Use the blueprint as a checklist. Go through each area and ask yourself:
-
Do I understand this topic?
-
Can I answer questions about it?
-
Can I apply the rule to a new situation?
-
Have I practiced this topic recently?
If you find an area where your answer is no, add it to your review list. This gives you a clear starting point instead of reviewing every chapter in the same way.
2. Review Tax Compliance and Planning
Tax compliance and planning are central to TCP. Your review should cover the topics included in the current blueprint and your study materials.
Don't focus only on memorizing a rule. Try to understand how the facts in a question affect the result.
For example, when you study a tax topic, ask yourself what changes if the taxpayer, transaction, or other facts are different. This habit can help you work through questions that do not look exactly like the examples in your study material.
Your review may include individual tax planning, entity taxation, property transactions, and other tax-related areas listed in the TCP blueprint.
3. Practice MCQs and Review Your Mistakes
Practice questions can show you whether you understand a topic or only remember the information from your notes.
The TCP section includes two MCQ testlets, each with 34 questions.
As you practice, do not focus only on your score. Pay attention to why you miss a question.
Ask yourself:
-
Did you forget a rule?
-
Did you miss an important detail?
-
Did you misunderstand the question?
-
Did you make a calculation error?
-
Did you choose an answer too quickly?
Keep track of repeated mistakes. If you miss questions on the same topic several times, go back to the lesson and review that area before doing more questions.
This is where a focused TCP CPA Exam Review can help you organize your study time around both concepts and practice.
4. Spend Time on Task-Based Simulations
The TCP exam includes seven task-based simulations across three testlets.
If you have spent most of your preparation time on MCQs, make sure TBS practice is part of your final review.
When you start a simulation, read the instructions first. Then identify exactly what the question wants you to find. Review the information provided and separate what you need from what isn't relevant.
Do not rush to check the solution. Give yourself time to work through the problem. Afterward, compare your approach with the explanation and note where you went wrong.
5. Focus on Your Weak Areas
It can be tempting to start the entire TCP course from the beginning during the final days. Instead, divide your topics into three groups:
-
Strong: You understand the topic and usually answer questions correctly.
-
Needs review: You understand the basics but still make some mistakes.
-
Weak: You have trouble understanding or applying the topic.
Spend more time on the last two groups. Review the related concepts, answer new questions, and check whether you are improving.
You can also keep a short list of rules or concepts that you often forget. Review this list during your final study sessions.
6. Practice Under Exam Conditions
The TCP exam has five testlets and a four-hour testing window. The first two testlets contain MCQs, while the final three contain TBSs.
Before test day, complete at least some practice sessions without checking your notes after every question. Work through questions in a set time, and practice moving on when you spend too long on one problem.
Also make sure your study material is current. The AICPA provides guidance on when changes to federal tax law become eligible for testing.
Summary
Your final TCP review should help you identify what you know, what you need to revisit, and how well you can apply tax concepts to exam questions. Start with the current blueprint, review key tax topics, practice MCQs and TBSs, and use your mistakes to guide your remaining study time.
If you want structured preparation, Vishal CPA Prep offers TCP review options that include live classes, practice questions, task-based simulations, study materials, and instructor support.
The goal before test day is not to study everything again. It is to use your time wisely and walk into the exam knowing how to approach the material you have practiced.
