Moving an Auckland office without losing Monday
Moving an Auckland office without losing Monday. What commercial movers need before the dock booking: lifts, IT, after-hours access, and a quote with GST included.
Moving an Auckland office without losing Monday
A house move can slip a day. An office move that slips a day is staff standing in a lobby with laptops and no desks. That is the difference. Commercial moving is a shutdown plan, not a pile of boxes.
If you are pricing commercial movers in Auckland, the useful questions are when the old floor must be clear, when the new floor can be used, and what cannot be offline. Furniture is the easy part.
Desks, chairs, the boardroom table nobody wants scratched. Workstations, screens, docks, and the cables someone will swear were labelled. Archive boxes. The shop counter if it is a retail shift. Warehouse racking if someone has been optimistic about “the boys will do it”.
CityMove runs office moves from its Auckland office, including after hours and weekends so the floor is usable the next morning. The quote is meant to include GST and fuel. If the job changes on the day, you should hear it before extra labour starts. You are booking CityMove, not a list of other companies.
A small tenancy in a walk-up and a full floor with a loading dock are different crews. Lifts need a slot. Docks need a time. A CBD building that only allows moves after 6pm is not a surprise you want at 9am. Put the building rules in the first email.
The hourly rate is visible. The lost Monday is not. A clinic, a law office, or a shop that cannot trade is more expensive than another mover on the truck. The usual way through it is a Friday night or Saturday move, with desks standing and IT able to test before staff return. That only works if packing started earlier in the week: pedestals cleared, personal items taken home, archives boxed and marked. Movers should not be deciding which files are live.
Label like a stranger will unload. “Accounts” is not a destination. “Level 2, room 2.04, left wall” is. Screens wrapped, towers numbered to the desk they came from, a photo of the cable mess before it is pulled. Confidential files in sealed cartons. CityMove’s commercial crews pack computers and files as part of an office move. They are not your IT department. Have someone who knows the network at the new site.
Auckland commercial buildings vary. Newmarket and the CBD often mean a goods lift and a short dock window. Light industrial in East Tamaki or Rosebank can mean a roller door and a forklift someone assumed you had. A Ponsonby shop can mean a truck down the street and a carry past customers if you have not closed. Heavy kit needs a path measured before the day. Office movers who have only done houses will treat a reception desk like a sideboard. Ask what commercial jobs they have actually run.
Four to six weeks out for a full floor, less for a small office if the building is flexible. Confirm the new site can take the load: lift booked, after-hours access, insurance the building wants named. Pack non-essential archives first. Move the network room, then desks, then archives. Walk the old site before you hand back the keys.
Intercity commercial work needs the same ferry slack as a house. A cancelled Cook Strait sailing should not be the morning your new branch opens.
Before you sign, ask who is on site with keys, whether the price is hourly or fixed, what happens if the lift is late, how IT and archives are handled, and whether after-hours is included. Carrier’s risk under the Contract and Commercial Law Act 2017 is limited. Transit cover is the extra if a server or a boardroom table is the thing you cannot replace on Monday.
Tell staff early what they pack themselves. Personal items go home the day before. Keys, alarms, and after-hours contacts belong on one page. If the goods lift booking is under a name nobody on site recognises, the truck waits. Retail is tighter than a back office: close for a morning, or move around customers. Warehouses need the racking plan agreed before the truck arrives. The move is finished when people can work, not when the truck leaves.
Commercial movers in Auckland earn the booking when the floor opens on time and the odd desk is the only leftover. CityMove’s commercial page is citymove.co.nz/service/commercial. Quote form or 0800 126 128. Have the building rules and a floor count ready. That call is shorter.
